Aztelekom
Who is Aztelekom?
Aztelekom is the national telecommunications operator of Azerbaijan, providing voice, data, and internet services to a wide customer base across the country. With more than 40% of Azerbaijan’s total internet users relying on Aztelekom’s infrastructure, the company plays a crucial role in keeping the nation connected.
How did they hear about NetIX?
Aztelekom was exploring network and peering service providers and sought a solution that could expand its international reach while integrating seamlessly with existing infrastructure. After evaluating NetIX’s strong reputation, proven track record, and extensive global connectivity options, Aztelekom engaged with NetIX to explore how its services could enable long-term network growth and optimisation goals.
The Challenges and Requirements:
In order to strengthen its position as the leading telecom operator in Azerbaijan, Aztelekom set out clear goals for its international expansion:
- To expand its international backbone ensuring uninterrupted internet connectivity for its large customer base (more than 40% of the country’s total internet users)
- To gain greater visibility and presence in the global peering community
- To identify which Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) would deliver the most value for their specific traffic patterns
- To strengthen their position and ranking in the international peering and network ecosystem
- To access a broader range of routes, improving connectivity and performance for their customers
- To optimise operational costs, especially when connecting to higher-priced IXPs
- To work with a trusted provider offering a proven track record and the potential for a long-term, strategic partnership

The Solution:
The Aztelekom team analysed traffic patterns and identified which IXPs would provide the most strategic and cost-effective peering opportunities. With access to more than 50 IXPs directly through NetIX, Aztelekom had a wide range of options to choose from. NetIX’s GIX service offered a powerful way to access 50+ IXPs at once, but Aztelekom’s priority was to establish a physical presence and visibility within the peering community. To meet this objective, they selected remote peering at individual IXPs, delivered over NetIX’s platform rather than only utilizing the Global Internet Exchange (GIX).
To measure how much traffic could be efficiently handed off, the team planned to test certain IXPs. NetIX enabled these trials by providing complimentary peering sessions, which delivered accurate, real-world results and helped Aztelekom make data-driven decisions.
Aztelekom chose NetIX’s remote peering services, establishing direct connections at Telepoint DC in Sofia, Bulgaria. Through NetIX, they benefit from a total capacity of 300 Gbps, with 1 Gbps directed to Frankfurt. NetIX’s efficient delivery of Layer 2 connectivity and cross-connects across key data centers ensures flexibility and strong performance.
The Result:
Aztelekom is extremely pleased with the outcome of working with NetIX, achieving all the goals they set out to reach:
- They now have full visibility into where their traffic originates and where it is handed off, enabling better routing and optimisation decisions
- They have reduced overall network operating costs and lowered their dependency on more expensive IP Transit services
- Through NetIX’s Global Internet Exchange (GIX), they have gained access to many unique ASNs
- They benefit from a dedicated 24/7 NetIX NOC team ready to assist with any query, ensuring operational reliability and peace of mind
Through its collaboration with NetIX, Aztelekom has strengthened its international connectivity, reduced costs, and gained greater visibility in the global peering ecosystem. With NetIX’s scalable solutions and trusted support, Aztelekom is well-positioned to continue expanding its network and delivering high-quality connectivity for its customers.
