Jakub Krsa - AS214757
Who is AS214757?
AS214757 is an educational, non-commercial project founded and run by Jakub Krša, a 15-year-old student from the Czech Republic. Fascinated by how the Internet works, Jakub taught himself networking fundamentals and quickly moved from experimenting with DN42 to building and operating his own real-world network under AS214757.
His project provides free tools, guidance, and services including IPv6 transit and a tunnel broker to help young people and hobbyists get into networking. Jakub has already received support from other leading industry players such as NL-IX, AMS-IX, and CDN77, and is in talks with global and regional operators.
The Challenges and Requirements:
Despite his impressive initiative, Jakub faced two major challenges:
Infrastructure limitations - limited access to colocation and interconnection sites.
Financial barriers - even with sponsorships, running and expanding a network creates costs beyond the reach of a student budget.
Jakub reached out to NetIX with a clear vision: connecting to NetIX at NIKHEF in Amsterdam to improve his peering toward Bulgaria and strengthen the connectivity offered to the small but growing community that depends on AS214757.
The NetIX Solution:
Inspired by Jakub’s enthusiasm and commitment to supporting others, NetIX stepped in to help him in his mission offering:
-
10Gbps of NetIX’s Global Internet Exchange (GIX) service and a 10G NetIX Primary Port (NPP) ensuring reliable access to the NetIX Global Internet Exchange
-
10Mbps Neterra IP Transit provided through the same port, ensuring additional upstream resilience
-
A one-year, free-of-charge renewable contract with flexibility to adapt as Jakub’s network grows
This solution allows Jakub to improve his network reach without the heavy financial burden, while continuing to support his educational and community-driven mission.
The Results and Benefits:
-
Better connectivity for Jakub’s users and peers, especially toward Bulgaria
-
Hands-on real-world experience for Jakub in managing interconnection, transit, and peering
-
Industry recognition as his project gains visibility and credibility within the global telecoms community
-
Support for future goals, laying the foundation to expand globally, and connect to more IXPs
-
A team of experienced telecom engineers ready to lend a hand or technical input when required!
Looking Ahead:
Jakub has ambitious plans:
-
Expand AS214757 globally with more PoPs and IXPs
-
Secure IPv4 resources to complement his IPv6-first approach
-
Speak at industry events such as RIPE, Peering Days, and NOG meetings
-
Pursue a career in networking, potentially at a company like CDN77, a Czech success story that has already supported his project
The NetIX Perspective
